This questionnaire provided an evaluation of the course and questionnaire	recommendations for future courses. No specific questions about course components were asked, but there was a space for students to make comments on ways in which the course had made them more independent learners. A number of students took this as an opportunity to comment on the Language Learning Centre, but five mentioned reading, with the following comments. There was also a question asking students to indicate the effectiveness of the course in leading to improvement in seven skill areas. The results appeared to indicate that students perceived least improvement in grammar, and most in listening and vocabulary. All areas, however, were reported on positively. At the end of the course the co-teacher was asked to provide a written contribution to the class report.

These reports are an administrative requirement, and at a minimum include the class profile, details about the programme taught, and an evaluation of the class performance. No comment on the extensive reading programme was requested from the co-teacher, but she remarked that 'The students appeared to enjoy this part of the morning particularly. By the end of the course most were engrossed in their books'. The co-teacher's comments endorsed the class teacher's own observations. There never appeared to be any reluctance about reading, only occasionally did a student forget to bring their reader to class, and students actively exchanged readers when finished. The inclusion of extensive reading as a component of an EAP programme was positively received by the learners and at least in some cases created positive attitudes towards reading. While it is not possible to measure the direct impact of extensive reading on language proficiency development in a teaching programme such as this, it was certainly not the case that the dedication of 16-17 hours of'class time' to extensive reading impacted negatively on student performance.

In light of the research that demonstrates the benefits of extensive reading, this is a positive endorsement of making a place for it in the EAP teaching timetable. Perhaps, indeed, it is sufficient to accept the benefits of extensive reading that have been shown in controlled experiments, and focus instead on ensuring the acceptance of extensive reading in higher education and EAP courses. Merrell Shoes on Sale One consideration, however, is the nature of the implementation of an extensive reading programme. Day and Bamford (2002) have proposed ten extremely sound and well-grounded principles for teaching extensive reading but there must also be flexibility in approach, as Green (2005) has also suggested. Interestingly, though, while this action research project shared some of the same features as the Hong Kong Extensive Reading Scheme in English that Green criticized, it produced different results. The: main similarities with the Hong Kong scheme were that the extensive reading component described in this article was not integrated with other components of the programme, and that the reading was individually-oriented. There were differences between the Hong Kong scheme and this programme, however, and these may have contributed to the different results. The principal differences were in the teacher's attitude to, and possibly modelling of, extensive reading as a classroom activity, and in the learners' responses, which suggested that they regarded the reading as contributing towards their language learning needs.

Custom Application Development - How to Ensure Success

If stats are to be believed most of the custom application development projects fail because they have overrun cost and still have content deficiencies. But have you ever thought what causes them to fail and how we can overcome them? Software development is a complex process involving a hierarchy of processes and its success depends on how well the hierarchy is followed. Failure at even a single step can lead to the failure of the custom application development project.

Most of the factors which a web development company blames for failure of a project occur in the beginning. Often when a project is reviewed an estimate is made about the time required to complete the project. Time estimation is done based on the available resources like staff, technology to be used and process to be followed. When a deadline to complete the project is set then often developers directly jump to the coding stage believing the faster you start coding the faster you are able to complete the project.

But this is a completely wrong approach and can result in software disaster. An ideal beginning to start developing a custom application is to prepare a good design. Absence of a good design will mean you will be consistently changing something or other throughout the development phase. When this happens time and money run like soil on the beach. To avoid such situation keep aside the temptation to start coding and spare some time to create project design. Take care of this single step and you will not even realize when the custom application development project gets complete.

Many web development companies claim to develop the best custom software at the best price. This phenomenon ultimately results in shortage of funds which delays the arrival of resources and this directly means custom application development slows down. To overrun such a possibility it is better that the web development company acts realistically and makes quotations based on actual requirements and not the hypothetical ones.

It is often said communication is the solution to even the biggest problem same is true even for custom application development where the software is to be tailor made keeping users and clients at the center. Use of communication methods which can help you collect the right data to assess requirements is very vital to develop exactly that product which will be liked by both the users and clients. Communication is also vital while communicating the project objectives to the team members. It is only when they will clearly understand the project requirement that you will able to develop the best.

Many project managers do not check the project in progress, they believe that the development is going on as planned and there is nothing to worry about. But the truth is as project progresses things change and these changes significantly affect the project. Hence it is important that the project is monitored at regular intervals so that the changes can be tackled at the same time and they do not affect the custom application development process. An effective way to do this is divide the task into small milestones and monitor their achievement at regular interval.

Making a Life Insurance Claim

When setting up life insurance, naturally people hope that a claim will never be needed. However in some cases it is – so we’ll take a quick look at the usual requirements a New Zealand life insurer has for assessing a life insurance claim.

First, there are several documents that the life insurer will need. We’ll take a brief look at each of these:

1. First, the insurer will need a copy of the deceased person’s Death Certificate. In some cases a Death Certificate will have been issued as “subject to Coroner’s findings”. If this is the case then the insurer would usually need to also receive a copy of these findings in order to assess the claim.

2. The life insurer will also ask that you provide them with a copy of the life insurance policy document. This will have been sent to you when you started your policy – and it’s important to keep this in a safe place. If you don’t have a copy of the document it will be OK (the insurer can generate another one for you) – however this could lead to delays in the assessment of the claim.

3. Finally, the insurer will require some form of proof of identity and age of the deceased person. If the insurer has already gathered this (for example during the application process) they should not require it again, however if this has not been previously provided the insurer will need to see it.

Also, in some cases, a life insurance claim might be made because the insured person has not yet passed away, but is terminally ill. If this is the case, the insurer will need to see a letter from the insured person’s medical practitioner stating that the insured person is likely to die within 12 months (or whatever duration their policy specifies).

Connecting Social Responsibility and Good Books

Berman (1997) offered a concise definition of social responsibility: "A personal investment in the well-being of people and the planet" (p. 15), including basic civic responsibilities. The simplest form of civic responsibility in the United States—voting—has a turnout that is consistently near the lowest of all democracies in the world. In a typical general election, it is a struggle to get half the country to vote. And the youngest voters are the least likely to vote. In 2000 only 40% of 18—29-year-old Americans voted; in 2004 only 49% voted. In 2006—with a war raging in Iraq—only 24% voted and some states had as little as 17% (Young Voter Strategies, 2007). Early analysis of the 2008 U.S. presidential election had 18-29-year-old voter turnout at about 52%. While this is a small increase from 2004, it still means that nearly half of America's youngest Breitling Replica voters are not voting. In a survey of 3,000 students at New York University, 20% would sell their next vote for an iPod and half said that for one million dollars they would give up their right to vote forever (Quateman, 2007).

But low voter turnout may be the least of the civic problems. Civic illiteracy is an epidemic in the United States (Delli Carpini & Keeter, 1996; Marciano, 1997). In a survey that asked 12 questions on well-publicized current events, 18—29-year-olds had an average of only 5.5 correct. Nearly half could not name the Speaker of the House or the president of Russia, and 60% did not know how many American troops had been killed in Iraq (Pew, 2007a). According to a 2006 Zogby survey, many more Americans can name the Three Stooges (73%) than can name the three branches of government (42%) and more can name two of Snow White's seven dwarves (77%) than can name two U.S. Supreme Court Justices (24%). And newspaper readership continues to fall. Only 16% of 18-30-year-olds and about 33% of Americans over 30 read a newspaper daily (National Endowment for the Arts, 2007).

Using young adult literature is one of the most meaningful and enjoyable ways for students to inquire into social responsibility because we can situate this content in the wonderful stories of good books. And within these stories are moral and ethical quandaries, just as they are in endless civic issues. Through young adult literature, students are invited and challenged to grapple with moral dilemmas (Proctor & Kantor, 1996). All of this emphasizes that reading and literature teachers are in a powerful position to teach for social responsibility. And turning those books into inquiry-based investigations—either on their own or collaboratively with social studies teachers—can help students to see a vital purpose for reading and thinking about what they read.

Below is some of the content that should be part of teaching for social responsibility. My purpose is to offer a more specific understanding of the knowledge and habits of mind needed for a socially responsible citizenry. Most students will not develop this social and civic literacy and the courage to act on it Tag Heuer Carrera Replica unless teachers make this knowledge an explicit and essential part of our classrooms. Each section below also contains book titles with short synopses that could be used to teach that knowledge, keeping in mind that all of the books could easily be placed in multiple categories. However, even when using books to teach for social responsibility we still want to create constructivist literacy experiences that honor each reader. Any book read for the larger purpose of social responsibility should also involve teachers giving their students the necessary space to interact and make connections with that text in their unique ways. Following this overview of themes and books for teaching social responsibility, I offer a detailed example of creating an inquiry unit based on the novel Black and White (Volponi, 2005).

How to Improve Your English Skills

After the mid-course break, students were required to write a letter to the main teacher, talking about the independent study they had been doing in the first half of the course, and what they planned to do in the second half. There was no directive to discuss reading habits, but the majority of students included comments on reading. These comments provided an assurance that reading was taking place outside the classroom. Thomas Sabo

In my own time, I always read books and repeat academic words to remember the vocabulary. Everyday I read letter, newspaper and easy book, maybe one hour a day and I memorize twenty words a day. Before sleeping, I always read fiction book which borrow from school. They also provided some evidence that students felt their language proficiency was improving as a result of the course, although students did not necessarily make an explicit link to the extensive reading component.I found that my English skills have improved lots, especially my reading speed and vocab. I did remember that I could only read 50 words per min before, but now I can read much faster. It cause pently [sic] of benefits in my life. Now, I found my English is improve during I study this course. I build vocabulary and my reading skills are better than before, also my writing is improved. I consider general reading is good for me. I want to keep it. (My) ... my reading skill is improving so fast. The letters also gave some indication that students had good intentions to increase the amount of reading they did during the second part of the course.

I read and write more English than before in E PP.but I don't read book home, I will do it in the second half of the course. I will read and write more than the first half of the course. I will read more than first half of the course, improve my reading speed, and under stand the article's meaning. I will read books, newspaper, and I also can watch TV, especial cartoon, film. I think this is more interesting, and I can learn speaking. Also I still will read news on internet.

Getting Up Close and Personal with Living Authors

We are interpreting "working with living authors" to mean interacting in a professional way with people who are "alive"—not just in the sense that their writing is contemporary and "lively," but in the sense that they are fleshandblood people. We can shake their hands and talk to them, and while they have the same needs and emotions as the rest of us, they also have the ability and the perseverance to put their ideas and their feelings into words that can be read and appreciated by thousands—sometimes millions—of readers, including young adults.

We are coauthoring this "EJ in Focus" because between the two of us we have worked in various ways with hundreds of authors of books written for young people. Perhaps the main thing we have learned is that each Omega Replica author is an individual, and when his or her emotional and intellectual chemistry is combined with ours and with all the other people involved in author visits, which is the most common way we work together, it is impossible to predict exactly what is going to happen.

Nevertheless, both of us consistently tell students they should never turn down an invitation to hear an author make a presentation and interact with an audience. Even better, if they are asked to pick up an author at an airport, introduce an author, eat lunch or dinner with an author, or in some other way serve as a host, they should jump at the chance because these are wonderfully efficient ways to plant authors' names and images in their minds, and to, in turn, make connections for their students between authors as real people and the books they have written.

When we read a book by an author we have personally interacted with, we feel as if the author is speaking directly to us. The plots are more exciting, the metaphors more powerful, the characters more familiar, the settings easier to imagine, and the philosophies more likely to inspire serious thinking. We are thrilled when we can bring young adult authors to visit with high school students, but we also love to bring authors to visit with teachers because over and over we hear how much closer they feel to an author when we add these kinds of personal anecdotes as we talk about authors and their books:

After our Arizona English Teachers' Association state convention, we had a few hours to wait for Gordon Korman's plane, so we took a small group to a pizza place. One young teacher had already retrieved her twoyearold from the babysitter, and as an experienced father and husband, Gordon fell into a comfortable role and took the little girl for a walk around the restaurant sidewalk so her mother had a chance to eat her pizza—an ex perience the mother says she will never forget.

The year that Christopher Paul Curtis was the featured speaker at the ALAN (Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE) breakfast, he asked all of those who were not members of ALAN to raise their hands. To everyone's surprise, he promised to use his speaker's honorarium to buy memberships for these 75 teachers. This is only one example of the many times we have observed the kind of warmth and energy that he radiates whether talking to a handful of eighth graders, a small group of teachers, or a banquet room full of admirers.

When fantasy author and London native David Clement Davies came to Arizona, he was thrilled to go on a side trip to the Grand Canyon and not a little amazed during his trek to the bottom when a US National Park ranger died suddenly from pneumonic plague. The ranger had been infected when he performed Tag Heuer Replica Watches an autopsy on a diseased mountain lion, and as a precaution David's group was quarantined. Eventually they were helicoptered out from Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Canyon. "I'm no longer contagious!" he joked as he told the story.

Although going to Mexican restaurants isn't quite as exciting as going to the Grand Can yon, many authors look forward to returning to our area so they can eat at our wonderful restaurants. Laurie Halse Anderson is an author who wants to save every kid (and will probably do it!), but after a day of hard work, she's happy to go out to eat. During the few days she was here, we took her on a tour of all our favorite Mexican restaurants—a different patio each night. We can't wait for her to come back!
